The LaPlaya Beach and Golf Resort, which reopened in the winter of 2002 after a $50-million renovation, blends classic Mediterranean architecture with a full complement of modern amenities. Anchored by a 15-story tower and several smaller buildings, it's a self-contained complex that features several new pools, a luxurious spa, a new 18-hole golf course, and upgraded conference facilities. SpaTerre, the hotel's full-service spa, offers dozens of treatments inspired by the rituals and therapies of Thailand and Indonesia. The facility's signature Javanese Lulur Royal Treatment, for example, includes a massage with jasmine and frangipani oils, followed by an exfoliation treatment, a scented shower, and a soak in a Japanese tub infused with rose petals. Less involved treatments are also available for everything from tired feet to sun-damaged skin. Elsewhere on the property, guests find a gift shop, an expanded fitness center, and 11,000 square feet of meeting space, including a full-service business center, several indoor and outdoor venues, and a large ballroom. Note: self parking is not available. Valet parking is $18 per night. Glass and coolers are not permitted around the pool area.

RECREATION
Already known for its beachfront location and proximity to local golf courses, the reopened resort has taken recreation to a new level. On site, four linked and landscaped pools form the social center of the property, and are connected by cascades, waterfalls, and other aquatic features. Guests seeking more privacy can reserve cabanas, where they may enjoy outdoor massages and beverage service. The resort has also opened an 18-hole championship golf course—designed by Bob Cupp—just over 3 miles from the resort. Open exclusively to resort guests, it's also home to a new David Leadbetter Golf Academy, which offers private lessons and group clinics. The resort also rents everything from bikes to boats to snorkeling equipment. The recreational activities listed below are available either on site or near the hotel; fees may apply.
